Kristy Barton - Broker
This month, we are talking to Kristy Barton to share some fun facts about her life growing up on a ranch in Southern Utah and why she decided to come to Central Oregon.
Where did you grow up and how long have you lived in Central Oregon?
I spent the first 18 years of my life on our family ranch in Southern Utah, followed by a year of college in Alamosa, Colorado and then finished at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, Oregon. My family relocated to Central Oregon in 2000 when I was a freshman in college and I absolutely fell in love with the area the first time I visited! After marrying my husband in 2005 we moved around Central & Eastern Oregon and Southern Washington a few times transferring for jobs and for him to finish schooling, but our hearts were always tied here to Central Oregon. Three years ago we made the big leap to move back and couldn't be happier!
Why did you decide to settle or stay in Central Oregon?
We are in love with Central Oregon! It offers a rare combination of opportunity and natural beauty that is hard to find elsewhere. My family has been here for the last 18 years, and our family is so incredibly important to us. Even when we lived elsewhere, Central Oregon always felt like our "home base" so it was just natural to come back for good.
Why did you decided to get into the Real Estate business?
Before getting into Real Estate I spent 10 years in the banking industry, with the last almost 4 managing my own branch in Clarkston, Washington. While there were aspects of the banking industry that I enjoyed, for the most part I found myself incredibly bored. I found both my body and my mind struggle with a desk job, and I desperately needed a change. So my husband and I took a big leap, left our jobs, and moved back to Central Oregon to chase a more fulfilling lifestyle. He got a job at a local brewery (which he loves!) and I took a two year "sabbatical" to get my body and mind healthy again. I spent my days building and selling furniture through my new business Resurrected Goods while contemplating my future move. I loved my time in the shop but soon found I was craving more human interaction. Through a lot of conversations and thinking it became clear that Real Estate would be a perfect fit. It was an industry I could use my banking knowledge, love of people, and creativity all in one! It is a career that has always intrigued me, and now that I'm doing it I can see why!
What is your favorite part of being in the Real Estate business?
I love the way each agent/broker gets to build their business in such a way that truly reflects who they are....and there is no specific "right" way to do it. It is a freedom of personality and preference that you don't see in many jobs/industries and it encourages creativity and individuality. It's incredibly rewarding!
What has been the most challenging part of being a Real Estate Agent?
I struggle with "self-promoting" so I am definitely trying to find that balance between "under advertising" and feeling "egotistical". I'm not the aggressive "chase you down until you work with me type", but rely on my genuine relationships and hard work to build my business. It's definitely a long game approach so I'm learning how to both stretch myself, preserve a super high level of integrity, and keep true to who I am. It's a constant learning process!
How do you balance your home and work life?
I have an incredibly supporting husband who is an amazing combination of independence and love. We make sure our times together are meaningful and connected, while also enjoying our times when work and life keep us separated. Hard work is incredibly important, but it also doesn't trump my marriage. So we soak up every possible second we get together.
What are your hobbies and interests?
I grew up a farm girl so I love being out on our family ranch and breathing in the fresh air. We love fishing, hiking and spending time with our dog and our family. I also love traveling, and actually just returned from an incredible mission trip to Haiti. Exploring the world with the people I love keeps life exciting!
Tell us something interesting you did that people wouldn't expect.
My faith is a huge part of my life, yet I have found it difficult to share that in certain situations. Just weeks ago I went on a mission trip to Haiti with 6 other incredible people from our local church (Grace Gate). I have never felt so out of place in my life, but it was also one of the most powerful experiences I've ever been through. It was both stretching and humbling. Pretty sure my heart will never be the same. Mark Twain put it perfectly: “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.”
Thank you, Kristy, for sharing part of your life with us! It's always fun getting to know our agents a little better!
